Most of us will suffer neck pain at one time or another. When you’re experiencing neck pain, you need relief fast. As with other body aches, determining the most effective treatment begins by first determining the cause of the pain.
Neck pain can result from something as simple as sleeping on the wrong pillows or it can be the result of something far more serious such as a car accident or a sports-related injury. Oftentimes, the pain in our neck results from tension or stress. Anything that impacts any of the muscles, joints, or tendons located in the neck area can cause serious and even debilitating neck pain. Neck pain does not always originate in the neck either. It can also result from injuries to the back or spine.
If you’ve not been involved in an accident recently, your neck pain might simply be stress-related. Start by taking steps to relax. Stretching exercises combined with a source of heat applied directly to the pain either from a heating pad, submersion in a hot tub, or topical ointment is the best first course of action. Never deny yourself the opportunity to indulge in massage, either. Performed by a professional or a friend, targeted massage can relieve even the worst pain.
These are the remedies prescribed first even when your neck pain is caused by bruised or injured muscles or tendons, because there’s really no way to treat these delicate body parts. They have to heal on their own. Heat and rest help relax these areas and can also improve blood circulation.
When neck pain won’t go away, it’s usually a sign of something more serious. That’s also when you need to seek medical advice. Be prepared to describe the neck pain because again, doing so will help narrow down the problem. Is the neck pain dull or sharp? Does the area where the pain exists feel weak or numb, excessively hot or even cool? Is the area changing color, swollen, or in any other way deformed? These can all be signs of more serious trouble, trouble that might even require treatment in the form of traction or chiropractic manipulation.
Traction works by gently stretching out the neck area. Typically, a halter or harness-type device is attached to the head and also to a series of weights. The harness holds the head steady while the weights help with the stretching.
Chiropractic manipulation, also sometimes called neck adjustment, is a practice whereby the affected area is identified. Then, an effort is made to apply tension around the affected area with the ultimate goal of helping to “pop” the affected muscle or joint back into place. Once back where it should be, the pressure that was building up is usually released, and the pain it was causing usually begins to subside.
Your neck is a delicate area and any pain must be taken seriously. If not treated properly and promptly, neck pain can lead to further complications. Don’t let this happen to you.

Many people suffer from neck stiffness and soreness, and it's no wonder. Your neck has the difficult burden of carrying your head around, and it never gets a break except when you lie down. This neck push can be done sitting or standing and helps strengthen your neck muscles, which in turn will help alleviate some of the discomfort.
Keeping your head upright, hold the palm of one hand against your forehead
and press your head forward, resisting with your palm. Hold for 10 to 15
seconds. Now clasp your hands behind your head and press your head backward,
resisting with your hands. Hold for 10 to 15 seconds. Now hold your right hand
against the side of your head and press your head to the right, resisting with
your hand. Again, hold for 10 to 15 seconds. Then repeat on left side.
Relax and Roll
Stress and anxiety often lead to an aching neck. Poor posture also plays a role. This stretch relieves tension in your neck and surrounding muscles. Relax your shoulders and let your head roll forward, chin to chest. Slowly rotate your head in a circle without straining your neck. Repeat five times. Relax. Then rotate in the opposite direction and repeat five times. Try not to raise your shoulders as you do this exercise
