Few experiences in life, save for a pelvic exam, feel quite so deliberately
uncomfortable. Does that spotlight aimed at your face really need to be so
blinding? Is it necessary to use your hyperventilating chest as a storage tray
for their picks and pliers? And does it have to smell, well, so much like a
dentist's office?
No, no and no, says Dr. Shawn Keller. "There's just no reason for a visit to the
dentist to be as bad as all that," says the Redmond dentist, whose office smells
like fresh-baked chocolate-chip cookies. (He has his staff bake them in the back
throughout the day.)
Keller and a number of other dentists, in the Seattle area and across the
country, are trying to polish their field's reputation with a little TLC.
They're brushing up their pampering skills and enlisting the types of creature
comforts you'd expect at a plush day spa. In fact, the trend is called spa
dentistry.
As in, that light bothering your eyes? Here's a heated, aromatherapy eye pillow.
Bored? Slip on some virtual-reality glasses and watch a movie while you get your
teeth cleaned. How about a hot-paraffin hand treatment and a neck massage to
distract from that root canal?
More and more general practitioners are warming to the idea of spa
dentistry. For some it can be as simple as redesigning the waiting room
to look more inviting or adding scented candles. Others may go further
by adding more traditional day spa procedures such as facials or
pedicures.
Imagine a trip to a dental office where you will be greeted
at the door by the Patient Concierge. As you step inside, you hear the
trickling sound of cascading water from a fountain in the center of a
luxurious spa setting complete with marble floors, custom furniture,
beautiful columns, granite counters, fresh cut flowers and scented candles.
You will be shown to a 'relaxation room' that is softly illuminated with candles and filled with the soothing sounds of Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman drifting from the surround-sound, state-of-the-art stereo system. You will relax on a custom programmable massage chair and be offered a variety of freshly prepared beverages, including champagne, and canapés served by the concierge as you wait your turn for treatment.
It may seem odd, but it's getting more and more common. Spa dentistry is a growing niche carved out by tooth doctors trying to take the bite out of going to the dentist.
Results of a survey conducted at the 2003 American Dental Association Annual Session showed more than 50 percent of 427 practicing dentists surveyed offered some sort of spa or office amenity.
