Japanese-style bed pillow plumps up competition in sleep products market

There may be some therapeutic merit to the sobakawa, according to Paul Saskin, clinical director of the Regional Center for Sleep Disorders, which is associated with Columbia Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center.

Without endorsing it, Saskin explains that any highly conforming pillow may help two sorts of sleepers: people who tend to snore when lying on their back, and people with fibromyalgia, which can cause pain in the neck and upper back.

In the case of a back-position snorer, the pillow could provide better cervical support to keep the sleeper's airway open wider, which would cut back on snoring, an audible vibration that occurs when the airway is narrowed.

In fibromyalgia, a pillow could "realign the neck just enough to ease pain in the upper (trapezoid muscles)," Saskin says.
