Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic acid) - When grouped and taken together, B vitamins work at their peak. One of eight water-soluble B vitamins. All B vitamins help the body to convert carbohydrates into glucose (sugar), which is "burned" to produce energy. They, and B5 specifically, are good for reducing swelling. This role in the reduction of swelling is one of the principle reason that it's use has been associated in the management of rheumatoid arthritis.
Vitamin B5 plays a number of important metabolic roles including the production of some hormones and neurotransmitters. It is also involved in the metabolism of all carbohydrates, fats and proteins. The best sources of Vitamin B5 include eggs, liver, fish, chicken, whole grain breads, cereals and legumes. Secondary sources of Vitamin B5 are cauliflower, broccoli, lean beef, white and sweet potatoes, and tomatoes. Vitamin B5 may have antioxidant and radio-protective activities. It has been attributed with anti-inflammatory, wound healing and antiviral activities.
In addition to its role in metabolism, Vitamin B5 supports proper function of the adrenal gland and is required for production of adrenal hormones. Vitamin B5 also supports the production of healthy red blood cells and it may help the body rid itself of alcohol-related toxins. Vitamin B5 may also support health in people with allergies while speeding wound healing and recovery from surgery, especially when taken in concert with vitamin C. Vitamin B5 accelerated wound healing of conjunctiva and the cornea after surgery. It may also ease constipation.
Vitamin B6 plays a role in the metabolism of protein, carbohydrates and fats, the production of neurotransmitters, and the formation of nicotinic acid. It is vital for maintaining a healthy nervous system, skin, muscles and blood. One of the central roles of this vitamin is in protein metabolism where it helps regulate the balance of amino acids in the body. It is also closely involved with the production of hormones.
Vitamin B6 plays a facilitating role in the immune system and the growth of new cells. This is one of the roles that leads people to look to Vitamin B6 in the management of arthritis. However, it has not been widely studied in the treatment or management of arthritis.
It also assists the body in the processing of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. And do you know that Vitamin B6 can help improve your disposition and balance your mood swings? Vitamin B6 also helps balance the sodium and potassium in your body—making sure the body utilizes these two minerals effectively. Experts also concur that this vitamin has cancer-fighting properties.
Great sources of Vitamin B6 are brewer's yeast, eggs, chicken, carrots, fish, liver, kidneys, peas, wheat germ, and walnuts.
The signs of a vitamin B6 deficiency are irritability, nervousness and insomnia as well as general weakness, and
skin problems. General symptoms include unhealthy looking nails, an inflamed tongue, osteoporosis,
and arthritis. Severe deficiency is rare, but surveys have revealed that marginal
deficiency might be quite common. The requirement for this vitamin is
increased during pregnancy and lactation due to the additional demands
made by fetus or infant.
Taking low doses of vitamin B6 daily may be effective in relieving the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), including depression, according to British researchers. There is evidence to suggest that 50 milligrams daily of vitamin B6 is likely to be beneficial in treating premenstrual syndrome and, at this stage, there is no conclusive evidence of neurological side effects. The researchers reviewed nine published trials in which vitamin B6 was compared with (an inactive) placebo in more than 900 women with PMS. Doses of vitamin B6 up to 100 milligrams daily were significantly better than placebo in relieving overall premenstrual symptoms and in relieving depression associated with premenstrual syndrome.
