No One Cause of Osteoarthritis

There does not appear to be a single cause of osteoarthritis, and, for most people, no cause can be identified. Osteoarthritis is different from other forms of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis, gouty arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and others.

Age is a leading risk factor, because osteoarthritis usually occurs as people get older. But it is not inevitable,  research suggests other factors seem to contribute to osteoarthritis. Sports-related injuries or repeated small injuries caused by repeated movements on the job may increase the risk of developing osteoarthritis. Genetics also plays a role. Obesity seems to increase the risk of developing osteoarthritis of the knees. The exact reason for developing osteoarthritis is not known and there may be more than one cause so that two people with Osteoarthritis may have extreme different profiles.

Osteoarthritis Risk Profile

Other factors are thought to increase the risk of osteoarthritis include:

  • It is thought to be due to deterioration of the smooth layer of cartilage which covers the ends of the bones. The small joints of the fingers are prone to breakdown of this layer, which seems to self-destruct in some people early in life.
  • It tends to run in families, and is probably a genetic condition in many people.
  • Joint infection - One theory is that some people are born with defective cartilage or slight defects in the way joints fit, and as these people age, they are more likely to have cartilage in the joint break down.
  • Degenerative joint disease can also occur after injury, but the typical pattern of osteoarthritis is that the small joints of the fingers are affected, but the other joints of the hand are not.
  • Repeated episodes of bleeding into the joint, as may occur in hemophilia or related bleeding disorders
  • Avascular necrosis, a condition in which the blood supply to the bone near the joint is interrupted, leading to bone death and eventually joint damage — The hip is affected most often.
  • Chronic (long-lasting) inflammation caused by previous rheumatic illness, such as rheumatoid arthritis
  • Repeated episodes of gout or pseudo-gout, in which uric acid or calcium crystals deposited into the joint cause episodes of inflammation
  • Osteoporosis, which can increase the risk of bone fractures, sometimes leading to osteoarthritis if they occur near a joint
  • Metabolic disorders, such as hemochromatosis, in which a genetic abnormality leads to too much iron in the joints and other parts of the body
  • Gender Bias

Women are affected by osteoarthritis more often than men. People who have osteoarthritis often complain of a deep ache, centered in the joint. Typically, the arthritis pain is aggravated by using the joint and relieved by rest. However, as the disease progresses, the arthritis pain becomes more constant. Often, when the arthritis pain is significant during the night, it interferes with sleep.

Some of the natural treatments described  in the next articles on osteoarthritis appear to work by assisting the body in repairing cartilage.
