Try Omega 3 Fatty Acid Supplements for for Arthritic Nutritional Treatment and Management

Can your diet effect your Arthritis?

One of the best established relationship between food and arthritis is that omega-6 fatty acids increase inflammation, and omega 3 fatty acids reduce it. It is clear that you should limit your intake of meat and poultry, and increase your intake of cold-water fish, such as sardines, mackerel, trout, and salmon. For salad dressings and cooking, substitute olive, canola, and flaxseed oils for corn, safflower, and sunflower oils which are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids.

Make  it an Omega 3 supplement. Omega 3 Fatty Acids can not be talked about enough when it comes to helping out your entire body as well as dealing with arthritis arthritis pain. They reduce inflammation, increase blood flow as well as promote the reduction of Coronary Heart Disease. Omega 3 (EPA and DHA) should be taken everyday even if one does not have arthritis. One should take special note to avoid Omega 6, as there is anecdotal evidence that extra amounts can aggravate arthritis and the average diet is saturated with Omega 6 already. Omega 3 however is generally in short supply.

Fish Oil

Oils from cold water fish such as salmon and mackerel have been used to treat inflammation, fatigue, and stiffness in rheumatoid arthritis. They contain the essential omega-3 fatty acids or “good fats” that are needed for good health and, “several human studies show that the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA in fish oil reduce inflammation and pain of rheumatoid arthritis.”

At least 13 randomized studies have been published. These controlled clinical trials have reported significant benefits of fish oil supplementation in rheumatoid arthritis patients.

Researchers conclude "dietary fish oil supplements should now be regarded as part of standard therapy for rheumatoid arthritis”

Researchers at the University of Newcastle added their finding to the weight of evidence in the favor of Fish oil.  Their study involved 50 rheumatoid arthritis patients. On low ogema-6 diets, half the patients were given fish oil capsules to provide a daily intake of 40 mg/kg body weight, the other half received placebo capsules containing 50/50 corn/olive oil. All subjects continued with their regular diet and medications. About half the patients dropped out during the experiment, mainly due to changes in their medications

There were no significant changes after 4 or 8 weeks, but at the 15-week evaluation major improvements were noted in the group receiving fish oil. Particularly impressive were the improvements in the duration of morning stiffness and the overall assessment of disease activity. Significant improvements were noted in 6 of the 9 disease factors in the fish oil group and no improvements were noted in the control group. Drs. Cleland and James conclude that “dietary fish oil supplements should now be regarded as part of standard therapy for rheumatoid arthritis”.  Journal of Rheumatology, Vol. 27, October 2000

A Review of 225 Studies

Researchers at Epsom General Hospital and the University of Glasgow released a review of existing studies  in regard to diet and inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Reviewing over 225 studies they concluded that there is considerable evidence that Rheumatoid Arthritis is caused by oxidative stress and involves an excessive production of pro-inflammatory compounds like tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-1beta.

Research has shown that supplementation with fish oils can markedly reduce interleukin-beta production and results in a significant reduction in morning stiffness and the number of painful joints in Rheumatoid Arthritis patients. Omega-6 fatty acids (found in cooking oils and margarine), on the other hand, have been found to exacerbate Rheumatoid Arthritis symptoms. Fish oils have also been found useful in the management of systemic lupus erythematosus as well.

Fish oil supplements should contain at least 3 mg of vitamin E per gram of fish oil in order to avoid excessive oxidation.   British Journal of Nutrition, Vol. 85, March 2001

Flaxseed Oil

An oil from the flax plant, this omega-3 fatty acid helps relieve pain, stiffness, and inflammation of rheumatoid arthritis. Although no specific studies on flaxseed oil have been conducted, the oil is recognized as a substantial source of omega-3 fatty acids, which promote the body's inflammation response system, and as a result, may improve Rheumatoid Arthritis symptoms.

To begin, here is a look at some vitamins, minerals, nutrients / foods and some herbal applications to consider in the management and prevention of arthritis.

(GLA) The Good Omega-6 Fatty Acid

Unlike other omega-6 fatty acids, Gamma linolenic acid (GLA) is an omega-6 fatty acid the body uses to make anti-inflammatory agents, It's found in evening primrose oil, black currant oil, and borage oil supplements. Several studies show it relieves the stiffness and arthritis pain of Rheumatoid Arthritis. In one study, some patients were able to quit taking NSAIDs.
