The most famous elimination diet for osteoarthritis has some of the most questionable research support. In the 1950's, Rutgers University horticulturist, Norman Childers, claimed that he cured his own osteoarthritis by eliminating plants foods of the nightshade family: tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, and peppers. The theory is that some people are genetically prone to joint arthritis pain when they consume the solanum alkaloids found in nightshades. Childers conducted a study by mail in which 5,000 people who said they had arthritis agreed to avoid nightshades. Over a 7 year period, 70% said that nightshade avoidance worked. However, none of the participants were examined by medical staff prior to the study or following it. There was no control group. The participant's reports were entirely subjective. Since then the arthritis foundation was established in 1980, promoting the elimination of the nightshade family from the diets of people with arthritis. This approach has gain a wide following.

Probably due to the difficulty for many people of maintaining this diet, we were unable to identify any adequately controlled clinical trials to establish a scientific basis for the effectiveness of eliminating nightshade family foods from your diet.
