While much of the information on this site, has an empiricist orientation, many perhaps most individual users are drawn to the use of essential oils from an intuitive and/or spiritual basis.
Many believe that essential oils have within them life-force energy, also called chi or prana. This living energy has a distinct frequency range which translates to a particular color ray. By matching an essential oil with its color and using the color ray of the oil with various systems such as charkas, meridians, reflexology, organs, etc., whole systems of analysis and applying essential oils have been developed, below is one based on vibrational frequency's and a persons energy centers or Chakras..

Essential oils can be used in many ways for spiritual purposes. They can simply be diffused for meditation or space clearing or used in massage or baths to clear and balance your energy field. An excellent way to begin the day is by anointing the chakras with one or several oils. To cleanse and clear your aura, place one or two drops of diluted oil onto your palms and sweep your hands through your energy field. When working on the subtle, energetic level, essential oils are best used in low dilutions. For massage, chakra anointing and ritual bathing, use a play it safe with a maximum dilution of 1% (1 drop of essential oil per 5ml of carrier oil). Or check out our specific dilution recommendations for each oil. Always focus your intention and thank the plant, nature and Spirit for the gifts and blessings you receive.
The Chakras
From the base of the spine to the crown of the head is a system of seven chakras. Chakra translates to Wheel or Vortex. It is through these energy centers , that emotions, thoughts and the physical body interact with and affect each other. Each chakra corresponds to a color of the rainbow and relates to a particular area of human life. As a truly holistic system of healing, aromatherapy harmonizes body, mind, emotions and spirit. Essential oils work on each level clearing blocked energy, balancing the chakras, and releasing our limitless vitality. Many oils have affinity with one or more chakras; starting with these guidelines, experiment to find what works for you.

Aligned from the base of the spine to the crown of the head is a system of seven chakras. Chakra Meditations
Base Chakra (Red)
Located at the base of the spine, the first chakra concerns issues of survival, instinct and grounding. In Sanscrit, its name means 'The Foundation.' If you're feeling spaced out and ungrounded, use earthy essential oils such as vetiver or myrrh to balance this chakra as you visualise strong roots flowing from the base of your spine into the ground. To reconnect with the earth, meditate outside in nature; at the beach, by a river, up a mountain, in a wood or even a park, if you live in the city. In itself, the regular use of essential oils will help you to develop and maintain your connection with nature and its abundance.
Sacral Chakra (Orange)
Situated just below the navel, the sacral chakra - also called the hara - is related to sexuality and creativity. To encourage flow in these areas, use absolutes and oils such as jasmine, ylang ylang and sandalwood. These oils encourage us to open to and accept our sexual selves and our need for pleasure and nurturing. They can also help to unleash blocked creativity. Use jasmine and neroli to rebalance masculine and feminine energies - receptivity and action - within the self. For more on sexuality and essential oils, visit the bedroom; in the study, you'll find more on creativity.
Solar Plexus Chakra (Yellow)
The solar plexus chakra allows the expression of personal power, individual will and its link with divine will. To boost confidence and self-esteem, use citrus oils such as bergamot, mandarin or grapefruit. Frankincense, sandalwood and neroli cultivate reconnection with divine will; use them with the meditations on submission. Use any of these oils at the beginning of each day, or before starting work or meditation to focus your intention. Citrus oils are cleansing, and assist in focusing and Sandalwood can provide protection through being rooted in love.
Heart Chakra (Green)
The heart chakra concerns unconditional love on all levels - love for others, divine love, and love for our selves. It links the 'lower' three chakras with the more spiritual higher chakras. To encourage the flow of love in your life use rose (otto or absolute) oil with the meditation of loving kindness..
Throat Chakra (Blue)
The Throat chakra links the Brow and Heart chakras. It relates to expression and communication. Linking with the other chakras, the throat allows us to express the truth of our hearts as well as our creativity, will and intent. To improve the flow of communication, use essential oils of sandalwood and chamomile (Roman or German). These oils will support you in reconnecting to your own true voice when using chants or mantras. The oils also increase sensitivity to the sacred vibrations within the world's sounds. Use them to enhance your appreciation of sacred music.
Brow Chakra (Indigo)
The Seventh Chakra is located in the centre of the brow at the the third eye, and is associated with wisdom, intuition and insight. Use Lavender and Clary sage essential oils to enhance visualization exercises and dream work and help you reconnect with and trust your inner guidance.
Crown Chakra (Violet)
It is through the crown chakra, our spiritual centre, that we connect with Spirit (God, Goddess, the Source, the Higher Self). Many essential oils are suitable for meditation. Frankincense and Neroli have a particular attunement with the crown chakra. Particularly useful in the advancement of breathing meditations..
The following lists are based on the progressive work of Suzy Chiazzari in her book "Colour Scents: Healing with Colour & Aroma".
