Blending Essential Oils for Aromatherapy Synergy

Blending essential oils is an art.  Some oils have a wonderful aroma on their own.  Many have a strong and in some cases; an order some may find slightly unpleasant.  Essential oils at both end of the spectrum have beneficial effects.  Even those oils with an widely appreciated aroma, can have their impact enhanced with the artful blending of other essential oils. For example the centering effect of essentail oil of cedarwood can be made more effective and more aromatic with the addition of essential oil of ylang ylang as is done in our relaxing blend.

Many blends are intended to enhance the aroma of a dominate sense or to extend the length of an oil's impact.  While citrus oils have an uplifting and pleasant fresh scent, they quickly dissipate and to many seem weak. A drop or two of a oil with a middle or bottom note, (heavier, or resinous) such as sandalwood or rose will greatly extend the life of the scent. Below are a few hint at melding the oils into a pleasant blend.

Impatient; go here to buy individual essential oils

Synergistic essential oil blends

Synergistic blends are created by blending three or more essential oils which complement each other.

A good blending rule of thump is that oils from the same family of sources blend with each other or adjoining oil groups.

Tree oils blend well with herb and spice oils

Resin oils blend with exotic and spice oils

Flower oils blend with exotic and citrus oils

If you are botanically challenged like me here is one of the easier definition of the difference between an herb and a spice.

Herb or Spice. The easiest way to tell an herb from a spice is to think color--green for herb, brown for spice. If you really need a more definitive answer, an herb is a fragrant leaf of a plant such as basil, chive and parsley, whereas, a spice is an aromatic obtained from the bark, buds, fruit, roots, seeds and stems of a plant or tree. Spices have been given more exotic names such as cinnamon, ginger and cardamom, they will excite and linger more then the herbal oils. They tend to the middle or bottom notes of essential oils. Secondly, I could wax on eternally about of every herb and spice known to mankind, but time is precious and this is a 101 course not a course on rarities. These are the most useful and accessible.

The basic sources for oils are:

Citrus Bergamot,  grapefruit, orange - sweet and bitter, lemon, lemongrass, lemon  lime, mandarin, and other citrus fruit oils generally made from cold expression of the rines.
Flowers Chamomiles, geranium, jasmine, lavender, neroli, rose, violet. ylang ylang.
Herbs Basil, clary sage, leafy seed based oils,  and common Herb and mints.
Resins Benzoin, camphor, frankincense, myrrh.
Spices Aniseed, anise-star, bay, black pepper, caraway, cardamom, cinnamon, clove, coriander, ginger, nutmeg.
Trees cedarwood, sandalwood, cypress, eucalyptus, juniper, myrtle, niaouli, pine, rosewood, tea tree.

We carry a nice range of blends for your pleasure and ease of use.
