Acupressure is an ancient healing art developed in Asia over 5,000 years ago. It is a branch of traditional Chinese medicine which emphasizes preventing illness, dealing with underlying causes in depth and treating the whole person. Acupressure is believed to be the ‘mother of Acupuncture’ in that it predates the use of needles to stimulate the body’s energy flow. It has the same principles as Acupuncture, but the pressure is applied directly to the Acupoints of the body mainly by using the hands, fingers, thumb or knuckles and sometimes by using a smooth, blunt object. Stimulation of the body’s meridian system by touch is perhaps one of the oldest healing systems.

In the early Chinese dynasties, when stones and arrows were the only implements of war, many soldiers wounded on the battlefield reported that symptoms of disease that had plagued them for years had suddenly vanished. Naturally, such strange occurrences baffled the physicians who could find no logical relationship between the trauma and the ensuing recovery of health. After years of meticulous observation, ancient Chinese physicians developed ways of curing certain illnesses by striking or piercing specific points on the surface of the body.
An Acupressure therapist works with the same pressure points used in acupuncture – called acupoints - stimulating these healing sites with finger pressure, rather than inserting fine needles. Acupressure is closely related to the western technique of Trigger point release therapy.
Acupressure is a way of accessing and releasing blocked or congested energy paths in the body. Acupressure points lie on energy pathways called Meridians.
They also supply energy called Vital Energy (Pran in India and Chi in China). This vital energy flows in human body through the meridians. Meridians are of two types :
Yin or Female Meridians (generally reinforcing, revitalizing functions)
Yang or Male Meridians (generally protective functions).
When individual points or meridians become blocked or congested you experience pain or discomfort on a physical level. On an emotional level you may become frustrated or irritable, and on a spirit (energetic) level you may experience a sense of feeling ungrounded, vulnerable, and have difficulty knowing your purpose in life.
One interesting theory of acupressure states that it is not necessarily the organ that relates to the system the cause of the problem. It is the "root cause" that is the main cause of the disease/malfunction and if the root problem is cured, the external problem is cured as well. This can be explained in an easier way by using, an example. Suppose a person is suffering from asthma. An allopathic doctor would prescribe a medicine or steroid that would give rest to the lungs and relieve the symptoms because an allopathic thinks that the cause for asthma problems is the lungs. An acupressurist on the other hand, will try to find the root cause i.e. the reason why the lungs are malfunctioning.
An acupressurist would read the whole body by reading energy pulses located on the arms to diagnose the root cause and once the root cause is diagnosed, the doctor will give points to cure that specific problem, not asthma. A root cause could be anything like poor digestion, excessive heat, bad circulation, depression, or bad hormones. A root cause could even be just the organ that is giving the problem. So a person with asthma could have weak lungs that are the root cause of the problem. There have been cases where people with totally healthy lungs suffer from asthma because of other problems like bad stomach, weak circulation, or even bad hormones, and allopathic doctors give them steroids like cortisone to "cure the weak lungs".
By using deep but gentle finger pressure on specific points the blocked energy starts to release, allowing your body/mind to relax. Conducting acupressure on yourself is possible, these tools can help the Healthy Body Ball. and the BackNobbler II
