The Buckwheat Pillow

is 100% Natural

The Buckwheat Hulls used in these pillows are 100% Quality Assurance International (QAI) Certified Organic, No genetically modified organism (NON-GMO), Kosher, Extra Roasted, Triple Cleaned. No fragrances are added to my buckwheat hulls, they are the finest buckwheat hulls available and are grown in North America. I also make Hot n' Cold Products which you can heat by microwave oven.

Buckwheat hull filling: Certified Organically Grown, a natural biodegradable grain hull, a byproduct of buckwheat grouts and flour production. It conforms to the shape of your body for a grounded feeling, and the little air pockets between the hulls permit airflow to keep you cool. These same air pockets are warmed by the infrared heat your body produces and the special 100% cotton fabric helps hold this heat to a nice warm temperature while you sleep.

All these products have hidden zippers and are made of 100% cotton.

My Therapy cylindrical buckwheat bolster offers forgiving support for spinal stretches, restorative postures and deep breathing. Useful anytime a part of you needs grounding during asana practice.

Bolster has a buckwheat hull filling, which offers greater resistance for more intense stretches. Also, the buckwheat hulls help the bolster retain its original shape over time. Hidden zippered for ease of cleaning.

Buckwheat Futon / Shiatsu Mat

Traditional futon style mats, wide enough to stretch out on comfortably - maybe used as a natural alternative sleeping mat, thick and soft enough for ample cushioning. Creates the ideal, nurturing environment for bodywork and breath work. Hidden zippered for ease of cleaning. The buckwheat hulls conform to your body to give a total supported body rest.

Buckwheat pillows have been and are globally used. For example in many European countries new borns are given both a buckwheat hull mattress and a buckwheat hull pillow. To promote sound sleep without being to cold our too warm while sleeping.

In Korea all children are given a buckwheat hull pillow by their grandmothers.

In Japan for hundreds of years and even today the only pillow that is available to purchase are buckwheat hull pillows, everyday ship loads of buckwheat is shipped to Japan from Canada, they make buckwheat noodles from the innerseed and make pillows from the hulls.

In Canada the first pillows and mattresses available and used by the first Canadians in eastern Canada, over a hundred years ago, was buckwheat hull pillows and mattresses. At that time they did not have cotton or hay to fill mattresses and pillows. Later, it was used in chicken coups too to help the chickens to deal with the cold temperatures of Canada, at times of the year no city in Canada is above zero degrees for weeks at a time.

Tatami Mats

Most Japanese houses have Tatami. Tatami is a thick firm mat to cover the Japanese-style room floor. Tatami mats are better than wooden flooring because you can relax on Tatami.
Tatami has a long history. Emperor Shoumu used Tatami as a bed in Nara era (710-794). It was the beginning of Tatami. In Heian era (794-1192), some rules were made about the use of Tatami. People in different social ranks had to use different kinds of Tatami. There were some rules about thickness of Tatami and color and patterns of its edge. The edge of Tatami for the emperor was made of the best silk fabrics.
In the middle of Edo era (about 1730), Tatami came into use among common people. In the Meiji era (1867-1911), farmers started using it. In Japan, we usually explain the size of a room by counting the number of Tatami mats which fit the room. For example, "My room is four Tatami mats size." The size of a Tatami is different from place to place.
The "Chuukyou-ma" type of Tatami is the most popular. Tatami is made of rush. The kind of rush to make Tatami is called "igusa". If you look at the surface of Tatami closely, you will find that Tatami is woven out of rush. To weave one surface of Tatami, they use about four to five thousand pieces of rush.
But the craftsperson doesn't use rush immediately after harvest. They sort rush by its use and grade (e.g., quality, length, color, etc.) before they use it.
Rush is used in Tatami's for many good reasons. For example, Tatami cleans air in the room because the rush of Tatami absorbs carbon dioxide. The rush is soaked in the mud immediately after harvest. This process keeps rush from changing of color and it also makes the next process easier. The far infrared rays are shed by this mud. Because of the far infrared rays, rush makes you relax. Also, rush has another wonderful function. Rush absorbs water when humidity of room is high. When humidity of room is low, it discharges water. Moreover, it prevents ticks in Tatami. Because Tatami is good to keep the room warm and let the air through. Therefore, you feel cool in summer when you sit or stand on Tatami, and you feel warm in winter when you sit or stand on Tatami.

Traveling Hints

When you travel you will want to remember to take your pillow with you too. Many times we have been called by our pillow users from some hotel somewhere where they realized they missed their buckwheat hull pillow and wanted us to ship them one right away by next day air. Also remember if you do travel with your pillow, don't forget it when you leave. We suggest you use a bright colored pillow case on it when you travel. Many users of the Large size pillow use the traditional size Makura to travel with because it is smaller and lighter.

Whether you practice Iyengar, Kripalu, Phoenix Rising, Ashtanga, Kundalini, Integral, Sivananda, or any other style of Hatha Yoga, you'll find a product here to suit you. The bolsters are used by mediators of many schools -- Zen, Vipassana, Tibetan Buddhism, Mindfulness, Insight -- beginners as well as long time practitioners!

Here are some descriptions of the more popular types of yoga to help you choose a suitable program to help you shape up. Ashtanga (Power Yoga) The preferred choice for athletes, Ashtanga yoga is light on meditation but heavy on stamina. Not only are the poses more difficult than those performed in other classes, participants are encouraged to move quickly from one pose to another in an effort to build strength and flexibility.

This style is suitable for anyone in good physical condition but should be avoided by those who are new to exercise. I

Yengar - One of the gentler styles of yoga, Iyengar is perfect for novices and those who haven't exercised in a while. It uses props such as chairs and pillows to compensate for a lack of flexibility, which is helpful for anyone with back or joint problems. There’s also a meditative bent should you prefer a combination of mental and physical fitness.

"You don't need to be a great athlete," says Jo-Ann Sutherland of the JNS Yoga Studio in Saskatoon. "It’s yoga for everyone."

BikramDone in a hot room that is 38C or higher (to replicate the temperature of yoga’s birthplace in India), this style of yoga focuses on 26 postures that are meant to be performed in a certain order. The exercises are intense and very physical, which, when combined with the heat, makes for a tough workout.

Recommended for yoga veterans only.

Hatha - This mellow form of yoga focuses on simple poses that flow from one to the other at a very comfortable pace. Participants are encouraged to go at their own pace, taking time to incorporate lots of breathing and meditation into their workout. This yoga is ideal for those needing a stress release at the end of a tough day.
