Encouraging us to be in touch with our health on all levels this guide examines the numerous therapies that benefit physical and emotional health. Following an introduction to the subject, chapters include: The Massage Therapies (including aromatherapy and Swedish massage); Zones, Meridians and Pressure Point Therapies (such as acupuncture, reflexology, and shiatsu); The Metaphysical Therapies (like chakras, reiki, and color healing); Bodywork Psychotherapy, Including Hypnotherapy and Rebirthing; Energy Movement Systems (such as yoga and Pilates); and Convergence Therapies.
Delcia McNeil examines each therapy, outlining which conditions it will help
alleviate and explaining its theoretical background and philosophy. Above all,
she advocates a holistic approach to health and the body, highlighting the
effectiveness of focused touch, non-invasive treatments, sensitivity, and
intuition.
With more than 650,000 copies sold, The Book of Massage is the classic guide to the relaxing and healing skills of the hands. Featuring both Eastern and Western methods, it presents step-by-step, beautifully illustrated instructions on everything from traditional massage to shiatsu and reflexology.
The Book of Massage is clearly and attractively illustrated, with numerous photographs. ( there is mild nudity in the book.) The instructions are well-written, easy-to-understand, and presented in a friendly manner.
Each of the three main sections of the book -- traditional massage, acupressure, and reflexology -- demonstrate the same richness and clarity of instruction.
I'm personally more inclined towards traditional massage rather than the Eastern/holistic techniques. But to my surprise, I found the chapters on reflexology and acupressure to be full of useful information, and I have incorporated several of these routines into my massages.
Regardless of which school of massage therapy you favor, you'll find the techniques presented in the book to be a valuable addition to your repertoire.
This is a superior book on massage, and I regularly recommend it to friends.
Give it a try!
In groundbreaking book, Bernard Schatz, P.T., a licensed physical therapist with more than forty years of clinical experience, teaches you how to relieve body pain in hours through a unique technique of soft tissue manipulation. He shows you how to self-treat 37 different types of body pain using simple but precise techniques. And he presents 50 actual case studies of men and women with pain who freed themselves of muscle discomfort using the soft tissue manipulation approach.
The pain-relieving techniques found in "Soft Tissue Massage" are user-friendly, easily applied, and clearly explained--ideal for many pain sufferers who have found no relief from conventional treatments.
According to Schatz, all types of pain share a common cause--injured tissues. When your muscles suffer an injury or trauma that goes unrelieved, they contract and get irritated, then sore, then rigid, then full of thick, ropy, scar like fibers, and the result is chronic pain.
Easy-to-use workbook format with 22 illustrated massage plans and step-by-step instruction allows parents to become active caregivers for their children.
For over one thousand years the Chinese have brought comfort, relief, and well-being to their children through a sophisticated, yet easy-to-use, system of massage. Now Kyle Cline, a Licensed Massage Therapist trained at Shanghai's prestigious College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, teaches Western parents how to become active caregivers for their children by using Chinese massage techniques to alleviate childhood ailments from the simple (colds, coughs, chicken pox) to the chronic (colic, bedwetting, asthma).
Chinese Massage for Infants and Children grounds parents in the basics of Chinese medicine, then illustrates 9 massage techniques, 63 massage points, and 22 complete massage plans. With additional information on a general health plan for all children and on using Chinese herbal remedies, Chinese Massage for Infants and Children can substantially reduce visits to the pediatrician and use of prescription medicines, while improving the bond between parent and child that is at the heart of good health.
The body never lies" in the Rosen Method, and through touch, will reveal
repressed feelings disguised as chronic pain. Once accessed, the patient can
begin to process those feelings toward recovery. This book contains an
explanation of the theory and practice of the Rosen Method along with case
studies that show how specific disorders are successfully treated. Photos and
illustrations are provided to further explore the philosophy and mechanics of
this revolutionary therapy which addresses emotional and physical ailments
through touch.
An enjoyable and very useful book. A Comprehensive step-by-step guide.
Beautifully, clearly and richly illustrated! Covers everything : what to do
before you start, basic techniques, massage for every part of the body,
aromatherapy, self-massage, massage for babies and children, healing massage,
and a little about pressure techniques (shiatsu and reflexology). This is "the
book" to have if you want to learn about giving massage. Show it also to your
partner and if you're lucky you may get to experience the magic of massage
without having to spend a fortune.
This book is a gem of simplicity and usefulness. It
integrates anatomy, myofascial techniques, holistic thinking and traditional
Chinese medicine meridian theory and also provides simple stretching and
strengthening exercises to help patients move from pain to recovery. It's
beautifully designed and illustrated; I especially love the calligraphic
drawings of the exercises. I can say that it is now one of my favorite
reference books.
I found this manual to be extraordinarily helpful. The concise,
well-articulated instruction on proper body mechanics, as well as the detailed
anatomical drawings, and clear, illustrative photographs, make this handbook a
tool I refer to constantly. Every massage practitioner will want to own this
invaluable, definitive publication.
As an aging athlete trying to stave off encroaching decrepitude I have
found this manual to be quite useful for the information it provides on
anatomy and treatment of problems that my increasingly recalcitrant
anatomical features are causing. The sections on stretching and proper body
use are supplemented by excellent anatomical drawings that allow me to
understand why I am feeling pain, and some techniques for alleviating it.
The book is primarily directed towards massage professionals, and there is
information that is not relevant for me, but even that information could be
useful for a massage recipient to become a better partner in their
treatment. |
Craniosacral therapy improves the central nervous system,
strengthens resistance to disease, enhances overall health, and treats a wide
range of ailments, including learning disabilities, autism, post-traumatic
stress, and cancer. Using a lighter touch than other techniques, this method
mobilizes the pressure of cerebrospinal fluid and the bioelectrical connectivity
of fascial tissue to affect sites of physical and emotional trauma. In this
book, the founder of craniosacral therapy tells the story of its development in
the 1970s and outlines its methods, practices, differences from similar
therapies, and superiority to invasive treatments such as surgery. Dr. Upledger
uses stories from his patients' and his own experiences to describe the methods
and benefits of this fast-growing therapy.
Sports massage was first heralded by Rich Phaigh and Jack Meagher. Now that their work has gone out-of-print after two decades, Johnson has ridden the wave of a booming profession and service. Her work should find an even more enthusiastic audience as she works on a more technical manual.
Illustrated step-by-step massage techniques, warm-ups and stretches are described that will help prepare the muscles for workout and reduce post exercise discomfort. Included are sports-specific massage routines for runners, cyclists, and team-sports players. Specific hands-on routines demonstrate how to target the hamstrings, shoulders, lower back and other vulnerable muscle groups.
