A wide range of research studies has been conducted on the effect of reflexology in the treatment of various diseases. Some of them are listed below:
Amenorrhea :- Patients suffering from amenorrhea were divided into two groups. One group had 50 patients who were given foot reflex therapy treatment. The other group had 45 patients who were given traditional Chinese medicine tablets. The foot reflex therapy group was found to be 96% effective than the control group rate of 33%.
Cardio-vascular system :- In a single blind study a control group of four individuals were compared with ten recipients of reflexology work and ten recipients of foot massage work.
As compared to the control group, the reflexology and foot massage groups showed greater reductions in baroreceptor reflex sensitivity. No significant difference in blood pressure after intervention was found by this study. After reflexology and foot massage, the frequency of sinus arrhythmia increased by 43.9% and 34.1% respectively.
Diabetes : 32 patients suffering from type II diabetes mellitus were randomly divided into two groups. One group was treated with conventional Western medicine hypoglycemic agent (1) while the other was given conventional Western medicine hypoglycemic agent plus foot reflexotherapy (2). It was observed after one month that no significant change took place in group (1) while group (2) showed increased reduction in fasting blood glusoce levels, platelet aggregation, length and wet weight of the thrombus, senility symptom scores and serum lipid peroxide (LPO) This study concluded that foot reflexotherapy was an effective treatment for type II diabetes mellitis.
Fatigue : Two groups were formed each containing twelve athletes: a foot reflexology group and a control group. Reflexology sessions were given daily to the test group. The same athletic training was given to both the groups and was monitored for appetite, sleeping and reactions to training. A better quality of sleep, better appetite and quicker recovery from fatigue and muscle soreness was seen in the reflexology group.
Urinary tract infection :- Two groups were formed each consisting of 12 patients of urinary tract infection. Norfloxin and foot massage was administered to the treated group while the control group received only norfloxin. 5 showed immediate amelioration of disappearance of symptoms and 7 showed amelioration or disappearance on the second day in the treated group while in the control group 4 showed amelioration or disappearance on the second day and 8 showed amelioration or disappearance on the third day. This study suggested that foot massage is effective in treating urinary tract infection.
Cancer :- Hospitalized cancer patients who were given gentle foot massage showed significantly improvement in appearance, appetite, breathing, communication (doctors), communication (family), communication (nurses), concentration, constipation, diarrhoea, fear of future, isolation, micturition, mobility, mood, nausea, pain, sleep and tiredness. Foot reflexology alleviates anxiety and pain in patients diagnosed with breast or lung cancer and a significant decrease in pain for patients with breast cancer. In short it can be said that generally all cancer patients receive some comfort from reflexology or placebo reflexology.
Arthritis :- It is a fact that reflexology cannot completely cure arthritis but it can certainly help reduce the discomfort to some extent.
Stress :- As we are all are quite aware that stress cannot be avoided and some form of stress can be exciting and fun such as arranging an event or playing a game. When we do not manage stress well then it poses problem. Studies show that majority of all illness is stress related and reflexology can help in reduce stress by inducing deep, tranquil relaxation.
Circulation :- Circulation can be greatly improved using the relevant pressure points in the feet. Therefore the body is more likely to become ‘whole' again which makes you feel good.
Hayfever :- A reflexologist who treat patients suffering from hay fever focuses on the pressure points for the chest, bronchial areas, sinuses, pituitary gland, eyes, nose and throat, the ileocaecal valve (at the junction of the small and large intestines), intestines (mucus) and adrenal glands. This can help to keep symptoms under control and maintain general well being and can have a lasting effect throughout the season.
Back pain :- Back pain can interfere with work and can also be very inconvenient for anyone who plays sports. It affects a large number of people and can disrupt daily life. A few treatments of reflexology have helped many chronic back pain sufferers and patients suffering from sciatica.
Reflexology and children :- Along with adult's reflexology is also useful for children of all ages. It has known to help children with hyperactivity, bed-wetting, recurring headaches etc. Children suffering from weight loss can also be helped through reflexology and they and children are often more likely to take advice from a reflexologist than a parent. Children tend to understand more easily what is happening to their bodies while receiving treatment and it is much easier for the therapist to explain them.
